Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is the primary transportation hub of the greater Detroit metropolitan area. The airport officially opened on Feb. 22, 1930. It is located 20 miles to the west of downtown Detroit in Romulus, Mich. It is also situated 25 miles to the east of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan.
Detroit Metro Airport serves more than 160 destinations and is a major hub for Delta Air Lines. The airport’s top destination is Atlanta, as 649,000 passengers fly this route on an annual basis. Other popular destinations include Orlando, New York, Chicago and Las Vegas.
Planes also fly from here to international locations such as Paris and Hong Kong, a 16-hour flight. The Detroit-Hong Kong route is the 16th-longest scheduled non-stop route in the world at 12,645 miles each way.
The McNamara Terminal opened in 2002 and at a mile long is the world’s second longest. The ExpressTram is a people mover that sits 21 feet above the main floor and runs from end of the terminal to the other in three minutes. The capacity for each of the two cars is 208 people. There are three stops: one at each end and one in the middle of the concourse.
There are a few public transportation options available at the airport. The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) operates a pair of bus routes from the airport to downtown Detroit and elsewhere in the metropolitan area. The Michigan Flyer operates buses from Detroit Metro Airport to three locations in Ann Arbor and a stop in East Lansing, home of Michigan State University.
The airport is the largest in Michigan and also serves Toledo, Ohio, and Windsor, Ontario. Other airports of significant size in the Wolverine State include the Gerald R. Ford International Airport, located 13 miles southeast of Grand Rapids, and Flint’s Bishop International Airport.
